SCAD graduate wins 2006 Met Home of the Year Contest; Alumna also featured on HGTV’s “Small Space, Big Style”SAVANNAH, GA. — Metropolitan Home editors announced in the March 2006 issue the winners of the 2006 Met Home of the Year contest. SCAD alumna Alison Brungart was selected as one of the winning entries for her artful planning in making the most of her 400-square-foot Miami Beach condo.Along with the publication in Metropolitan Home, Brungart also was featured on HGTV's "Small Space, Big Style" segment titled "Pint-sized Palaces" premiering Feb. 9–11, 2006. "I have always wanted to be a designer," said Brungart. "My signature style is modern, clean lines — fun but with a sophisticated use of color and a nod to the past. My nickname around the SCAD shop was ‘retro-modern’ girl.” After graduating from SCAD in 2001 with a B.F.A. in furniture design, Brungart moved to Miami. She is a studio proprietor with Design Within Reach in Coral Gables and last year started her own company Alison Brungart, Inc. Brungart has worked in architectural firms in Miami and has exhibited her furniture designs internationally. She is currently working on various local interior design and furniture projects. Brungart entered the Met Home competition in August 2005 in her own category “Best use of 400 square feet.” She submitted a written proposal with images of the condo transformation and gives SCAD credit. When designing her space, Brungart wanted to keep the design light and airy, designing custom built-in furniture in maple wood with hidden storage solutions that divide the space but also keep the space clean, modern and contemporary. In collaboration with her custom furniture, Brungart uses pieces she designed and fabricated while at SCAD to create a beautifully designed space that is an extension of her personal style and that of South Beach. “I knew when I first saw SCAD that it was the only place for me,” said Brungart. “While attending the college I not only learned the skills to be a successful designer, but my professors helped me to find my personal style and build on it.” About the College The Savannah College of Art and Design exists to prepare talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture.
